With just days ‘til the Beauty Shortlist Awards close we’re spending the next 3 months testing and shortlisting the most-loved, expert-tested beauty and grooming heroes of 2020 (**last day for entries Friday 8 November).
(If the unboxing has been anything to go by, these awards are feeling like the most exciting yet, even with samples still coming in till Friday 15th).

This week marks the arrival one of the most-anticipated grooming launches of the year: skincare expert Jane Scrivner’s new SCRIVNER FOR MEN RANGE
Too noteworthy not to dive in to deeper, I caught up with Jane in between QVC appearances and all the pre-launch prep for a behind-the-scenes “first look” at her new #5StepSkincareStrategy for men.
This one’s been worth the wait…and YES there’s a COMPLETE 5-STEP KIT BAG with a grey cotton cleansing mitt plus a try first TRIAL KIT £23 (joy!). The entire range is out now and the KIT BAG will be wrapped in a special ‘Christmas sleeve’ from mid November onwards in time for Santa Claus shaving season.

CLEANSE: STEP ONE
NOURISH ENRICH CLEANSING BALM
This new pre, during or post-shave balm’s stars include: jojoba oil (actually a wax ester that’s super-compatible with skin), Rice Bran Wax, Carrot, Curcuma, Star Anise and Labdanum Essential Oils. Labdanum Oil is extracted from Cistus Ladanifer a species of rock rose.
(…quick side note: Rock Rose is the SOS hero used in flower essences like Bach Remedies Rescue Remedy and Saskia’s Flower Essences’ “Shock Release & Calm and Confident”).

THE GROOMING SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW WITH JANE SCRIVNER: SCRIVNER FOR MEN
Q: Jane, what was the moment (if there was one “lightbulb moment”) when you decided you would create a men’s range?
If you can have ‘slow drip’ lightbulbs then that’s more how it was than a lightening flash. Pretty much every week we would get comments like ‘I don’t know where it’s going’ or I don’t know how I’m getting through it so quickly or conversely ‘My Cleanser keeps being nicked by my partner or ‘I’m buying two this time, one for him and one for myself to stop it being stolen’
Sit that with my very own Mr JS running out of product and stalking my dressing table to sweep mine away and it became a no brainer. Of course there was no issue with male skin using the range formulated for female skin BUT with a little reformulation, it could work harder and better for everyone’s skin.
Q: How long did it take from idea to launch?
It feels a lot longer but in reality it has literally been 8 months. But 8 very busy months.
We are a small business and this means we do everything internally, so from testing formulations, blending essential oils to therapeutic fragrance level, choosing packaging and writing labels and manuals – not to mention the onerous task of deciding on what colour fluffy mitt to choose!
We made it by 1 November (but only just!). I would normally want 12 to 18 months but SCRIVNER for MEN has fallen into place beautifully – which I guess means it was meant to be.
Q: So for someone wanting to initially dip in, which one or two products would you recommend kicking off with?
Most definitely SKIN CLEAN and then SKIN PROTECT. Topping and tailing the range and then add the products in between as your skin needs them.
The cleanse is everything and with SKIN CLEAN we have the added benefits of a pre shave balm or a during shave skin softener or a post shave calming, nourishing cleanse – so however and whenever its used in the morning ritual it slots in and looks after skin.
Applying SKIN PROTECT after works to calm the skin post shave, soothe any irritation and protect the moisture levels with the gorgeous Organic Oat and Argan Oils – not to mention that both products have #shaveblend essential oils.
Containing curcuma, carrot seed, opoponax and labdanum to not only smell gorgeous but to act as a valuable anti bacterial, anti oxidant, soothing and toning element.
SKIN PROTECT: THE NEW MOISTURISER
Q: Why do you think grooming hasn’t quite taken off as dynamically as was heavily predicted industry forecasters around five years ago? Do you think women still buying for men, are men still borrowing women’s products, or how do you see this?
See question one! It’s clear that men are taking more care of their skin and their grooming and shave process but maybe it was too much too soon 5 years ago, the fact they are sneaking whatever is on the bathroom shelf to use, shows that this time could be the right time – time they had their own!
Introducing an organic and natural range that performs and smells irresistible and looks great might just be the formula.
Men realising that taking care of their skin is as important as taking care of their bodies is important, being able to do it ethically, cruelty free, vegan, organically and 100% naturally may just be the push they need.
Q: I know…a tough one…but what is your favourite from the range?
Actually, cheekily, it’s the essential oil blend that runs through the range – if you allow my indulgence. I completed a professional perfumers course as I know how important ‘fragrance’ is to products.
There are literally 1000’s of fragrance options, synthetics, nature identicals, concretes, absolutes and many more when formulating perfumes and we played with all of these on the course, BUT I am beautifully restricted to pure essential oils so my palette of fragrance was limited to those that smell amazing and have a skin therapeutic quality too.
Our products can’t smell nice for the sake of it, every last detail has to be a Skin Win, there’s no room for free loading ingredients.
After many versions and iterations, I finalised on what is now our JS SHAVE BLEND, and I have to say, I’m tempted to use it myself – therapeutically its soothing, anti-oxidant, calming, anti-bacterial, cicatrisant, anti-septic, toning and decongestant, aroma wise it’s a rich heart blend of liquorice and labdanum, modified with lime, mandarin and curcuma, balanced with carrot seed and opoponax then fixed with blue chamomile and sandalwood.
And if you won’t let me have the Essential Oil blend then it has to be SKIN CLEAN! You KNOW my views on cleansing!!!
