SEPTEMBER: THIS MONTH’S BEST-SMELLER: SUMMERDOWN MINT’S DELICIOUS NEW ROOM SPRAY LAUNCHES THIS WEEK

This year’s most mood-boosting, uplifting home fragrance launch has landed, fresh from the English minty green fields of Summerdown Farms.

The fragrance and beauty brainchild of Sir Michael Colman and his family (as in Colman’s Mustard), Summerdown Mint wowed us in the 2017 Beauty Shortlist Awards with their bath, body and home range. So, if you haven’t tried anything from the collection yet at www.summerdownnaturally.com you’re in for a treat!

If you’re looking for a housewarming gift or feeling a little nostalgic about saying goodbye to summer, this is a beautifully original way to scent your living space

The latest launch straight from the estate: Summerdown’s new ROOM SPRAY

NOT JUST ANY MINT…BLACK MITCHAM MINT

The Colman family’s iconic Black Mitcham mint is so special that it was featured on Countryfile recently. In fact, it’s so highly prized that the original English crop was taken to US because American farmers regarded it so highly.

Summerdown Farms have painstakingly recultivated this “King of Mints” and brought it home again

But now, Summerdown Farms have painstakingly recultivated this “King of Mints” and brought it home again, to their English farm (this particular mint is a famously tricky crop to grow, and it took Sir Michael Colman and his family over a decade to cultivate it successfully).

A fragrant work of art, Black Mitcham mint and lemongrass fuse into a wondrously have-a-good-day scent with the same happiness factor, as, say, mandarin or grapefruit, but more intriguing and addictive.

Summerdown’s signature scent has that vibrant, good to be alive feel you get when you step out of a chalet onto a snow-capped mountain first thing in the morning

Summerdown’s signature scent has that sort of sharp, vibrant, good to be alive feel you get when you step out of a cosy chalet onto a snow-capped mountain first thing in the morning, the British mint warmed by the zesty  tang of lemongrass – pepperminty, but with a blast of sunshine, if you like.

THE SUMMERDOWN SIGNATURE SCENT STORY: BEHIND THE BLEND

Interestingly, the creative force behind Summerdown’s award-winning blend is master perfumier Ruth Mastenbroek, which explains why it works so well. And one of the best things about this new Room Spray launch are the clever 4.5ml samples for just £1 (or FREE with any order from the Summerdown Mint website www.summerdownnaturally.com) so you can try it before you buy the full size (or…just buy the full size!!)

My Summerdown Mint Reed Diffuser lasted for months, and my heart sank a little when it finally ran out. It had lived on a table near my laptop all winter but it spent a few weeks in the guest bathroom, too, much to the delight of people who popped in for a tea (and commented on it so often that after a while I was literally waiting for them to ask about it when they came over).

If you’re looking for a housewarming gift or maybe you’re feeling a little nostalgic about saying goodbye to summer, this is a beautifully original way to scent your living space. (And yes, they do a candle! Luxe, aromatic, award-winning, and made with natural soy wax, beeswax and rapeseed oil it’s 98% natural and 100% definitely one for the Christmas list).

So…reasons to be cheerful No. 1 – September?

Now you can spray summer around your autumn bedroom because Summerdown Mint’s minty new English Summer-scented Room Spray has landed!

FRAGRANCE NOTES

THE STORY OF SUMMERDOWN’S SIGNATURE SCENT, IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Our perfumer, Ruth Mastenbroek, has been developing unique perfumes for more than 30 years. Even with those decades of experience, it still took weeks to create a scent that encapsulated an English summer.

“It did take several weeks to get the right balance. You are highlighting certain aspects but not squashing other notes. You have to modify and tweak the balances and that can take weeks,” she says.

“I based the scent on peppermint and spearmint oils and the process was about getting an accord of the fragrance that is robust enough to compete with the mints. They are forceful and you need something that is not going to simper. We needed citrus notes that were not going to conflict with the mints or be overpowered by them. It was the same story with the woody notes we added. It’s all about translating an image into a scent and the ingredients I can use to create the effect.

Ruth’s bespoke fragrance is based around our distinctive, single estate, Black Mitcham mint. Bright notes of lemongrass and zesty lemon blend with the greenness of galbanum, while natural oils of blackcurrant, clove, cinnamon and cedarwood add depth and long-lasting qualities to this individual, contemporary scent.

When you buy any individual item from the body, bath and home range – from lotions and washes to candles, diffusers and soap – you’ll experience the scent in a slightly different way, as Ruth explains.

“Each product takes up the fragrance in a different way,” she says. “For example, the washes throw out the mint – the top notes – to be refreshing and vibrant. In the lotions and the soap, the scent is more held in, so less of the mint comes through. It’s more delicate.

“Both the candle and diffuser fill a room but in entirely different ways, so what you experience is entirely different. You experience the scent in a noticeably different way, depending on which of the products you use.”
