The Man Who Invented Mascara

It was Mr Max Factor who invented mascara, and coined the term “make up”. The visionary makeup artist, wig maker and inventor put the G into glamour, transforming the icons of Hollywood’s Golden Age – Ava Gardner, Jean Harlow and Marlene Dietrich.

Given the right tools, any woman can be glamorous, he believed.  He arrived in LA in the very early 1900’s from Russia, and by 1916 he’d launched Max Factor’s first eye brow pencils and eye shadows. Four years on, he was selling a whole range of “make up” – his term – and you have to wonder if he had any idea how big, and influential, beauty and makeup came to be!

Max Factor’s latest mascara is the new Masterpiece Glamour Extensions 3-in-1 (as in Volume-Length-Darkness).  Designed to extend and intensify lashes, as Caroline Barnes, Max Factor MUA , explains, “Its unique quality is that the brush places a bulk of mascara at the base of the lashes which gives lashes incredible lift.”

Mascara doesn’t have the longest of shelf lives, so if yours has been used to death, pop in to Boots or Superdrug, the new 3-in-1 Masterpiece Glamour Extensions Mascara is on shelves now, RRP £10.99.

So thank you Mr Factor! It takes us longer to get ready to go out, but you’ve made it a lot more fun.
